The link between Shotton and Shelton works, previously owned by John Summers and Sons, comes to an end.

The capacity of the No.2 blast furnace at Shotton is increased to 2,500 tons a day by extending the diameter of the hearth to 28ft.6 in. and by using a thinner refractory lining in the stack, to give a 15 % increase in furnace volume. Similar developments were made later, in 1974, to No. 1 furnace.

The structure of the Corporation is re-organised into product divisions, with Shotton becoming part of the Strip Mills Division.
