To overcome war-time difficulty in obtaining refractory materials for lining the steel furnaces, Summers buys the first of its subsidiaries, the Castle Fire Brick Company with headquarters at Buckley, eventually raising its production from 40,000 bricks a week to 1,000,000 and so becoming one of the largest brick producers in the country.
The company also acquires Wolverhampton Corrugated Company, Ellesmere Port, to bring a further twenty sheet mills into the Summers empire.
